.... Two little people who are very important in our lives. They are Payton and Heather Cernek, twin daughters of our youngest son, Ben. They are, as he was, latecomers to our family, the 26th and 27th grandchildren. Most of the others are teenagers and up. We count it as a privilege to have them in our home, usually two days and nights each week. We have found much joy in each of our grandchildren, and these little cherubs are no exception. In fact, we are more free to give of our time and energy at this time in our lives.

Think of the various ways we spend our time and the decisions we make concerning what things are most important to us. Isn’t “spending time” literally investing it in something or someone?

We all find many different ways to invest ourselves in the world around us. A farmer’s life is especially demanding with its many responsibilities, yet each one still makes choices on the use of his or her time.

I have heard it said that there are only two things in this life that will last forever. They are God’s Word and people. These are things we do not want to neglect as we work through our scheduled and unscheduled tasks.

As I write this, we have extra grandchildren in the neighborhood, home from college or high school, who are working on the farm. I take special pleasure in baking cookie-sheet pies or batches of yeast rolls to share with everyone. It is a way to express the love I feel for them and their parents.

One afternoon I made some time to take some raspberry pie to a 93-year-old neighbor who is by herself much of the time. It didn’t take long to stop in for a visit, but it took a lot of effort on my part to “just do it.”

A helping hand, a special phone call, an encouraging note, an unexpected invitation, a loving gift or even a smile or a hug are not always easy to fit into a busy life, but are the things that make life worth living.

We are the hands and feet of Jesus in this world, if He is our Savior and Lord. He has given us His Holy Spirit to enable us to do His work here. I love the verses in Psalm 92 that tell us that “The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon...Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will stay fresh and green.” Isn’t that a great promise, especially for one who works with growing things as a farming family does?

We all want to live fruitful lives. I remember well, as many of you, the following words written on a plaque. Perhaps it was on a wall in your home as it was on mine when I was a child.

Only one life,
‘Twill soon be past;
Only what’s done
For Christ will last.

Such things are an overflow of our love for God and our desire to please Him. And may we, above all else, find time to spend alone, as did Jesus, with the One who is the Source of our strength - our Heavenly Father.
